SUV’s vs. Cars

The popularity between SUV’s and cars has shifted in favor of SUV’s. Although both vehicles are made to provide safe transportation, SUV’s are perceived as a safer driving option. Some drivers feel more secure and confident behind the wheel when sitting in a raised driving position with a better view around them. In the event of an accident, the occupants of the SUV feel they are less likely to be harmed because they are in a larger vehicle. On the other hand, cars are perceived to be a less safe driving option. Sitting in a lower position makes drivers feel that they are less visible to the other vehicles around them. They also feel at a disadvantage in an accident with larger, heavier automobiles. Here is an article from Esurance about the safety of different vehicles. Clearly, the passenger capacity of an SUV differs from that of a car. The SUV’s size offers more room for passengers, and some can accommodate as many as 7 to 8 people. This makes the SUV convenient for carpoolers and those with large families to transport everyone in one trip. Its size and height allow for more legroom and ease of entry and exit. Cars have less room for passengers, as most cars only hold up to 5 people. At maximum capacity, the ride can be uncomfortable, especially when there is a child in a car seat. Multiple trips or more than one car are needed to transport a larger group of passengers. Because of its smaller size and height, cars are more difficult to get in and out of and provide less legroom for passengers. Lastly, there is a difference in cargo capacity between SUV’s and cars. The interior height, length and large rear opening give the SUV a broader spectrum of cargo carrying capability, and it can haul more weight. Cars are limited by the size and weight of cargo that they can hold. Hatchbacks can provide a larger opening, but the interior height is too low to transport larger items. After considering the established criteria, it’s plain to see why SUV’s have become more popular.
